Celebrate 325 years of piano history at Studio Bell with performances by pianists from Calgary and beyond, featuring iconic instruments from the National Music Centre’s collection in the new Piano 325 exhibition.
Junhong (John) Jing’s musical journey began at the age of 7. Since 2022, he has devoted his time to working tirelessly in improving his skills both as a student, and as a performer in the field of classical music. His passion and achievements have led to praise and recognition among both his peers, teachers, and professionals at the recently concluded Pathways Music Competition and the Canadian Music Competition.
John’s approach to piano stems from a combination of recognizing the importance of playing music that he himself enjoys as well as the attention to detail that has very quickly proven to be necessary in displaying a convincing level of understanding in piano performance.
Through his own experience, his love for pieces by Mozart and Chopin have become increasingly evident — his wish is to be able to become a productive member of the music community in Calgary through sharing the music that he loves. At the same time, he considers it an honour to be able to perform at Studio Bell and more importantly, for providing him with the chance to serve.
Piano 325 is a new National Music Centre exhibition celebrating the 325th anniversary of the piano. Over three centuries, the piano — shaped by the innovations of countless builders and manufacturers — has remained one of the most important and versatile instruments in music, influencing nearly every genre and artists from Beethoven to Elton John.
Piano 325 spotlights the stories of the builders and manufacturers who played key roles in the instrument’s evolution and lasting impact on music. The exhibition will feature renowned names like Broadwood & Sons, Erard, Heintzman & Co., and Steinway & Sons, alongside lesser-known pioneers like Johannes Zumpe. A rotating selection of rare and historic instruments from NMC’s collection will also be showcased, including an 1899 Broadwood grand piano.
