MUSIC TYPEWRITER, 1962
MUSICWRITER
MADE BY SMITH CORONA | USA
ON LOAN FROM BING HAN | CALGARY, ALBERTA
“The Musicwriter is a typewriter that is used to print music. Invented in 1955 by Cecil Effinger, it was designed to be ‘as easy for a musician to use as a standard typewriter is for a novelist.’ It does not require special manuscript papers, as the Musicwriter can produce its own staff lines. This Smith Corona Musicwriter was acquired by me in 2019, a Calgarian with 6 years of experience collecting typewriters. The original owner was a musician who bought it in Vancouver in the 1980s. It was manufactured in 1962 and it is speculated that less than 1000 were made, with only 2 available in Canada.”
