The thoughtful and sleek vocal stylings of Yolanda Sargeant and brilliant, low-tempo persuasions of Evgeniy Bykovets may seem an odd pairing, but the combination proves near brilliance. A fever-dream of Erykah Badu singing Billie Holiday backed by Massive Attack – the dynamic group are both magnetic and relevant, engaging and narcotic. Intellectually stimulating while remaining accessible, consciously uncoupling from the preconceptions of trip-hop and self-described as ‘Lo-Fi Soul’, the result is something entirely unprecedented. Although Canadian duo Sargeant X Comrade are decidedly understated in approach and attitude, their hypnotic melodies have been hard to miss. The two have been collaborating and creating waves both on and off stage since 2014, boasting partnerships with Kool Keith, Moka Only, Scotty Hills, Planet Asia, Choclair and Touch, among others. Their forward-thinking, Neo-soul style is both evident and curated, expertly showcased on their 2020 EP ‘Magic Radio’. Daughter Dentist is the lovable soul-pop project of Alberta songwriter Krystle Robyn. Earnest, warm, and fun-loving in her performance and personality, Krystle has cultivated a project that is chalked full of “new age singer-songwriter jams”, according to Dan Northfield, owner of The Palomino. Her songs are light, fun, and genuine, and provide a living room relatability.
2023 brought the release of Daughter Dentist’s debut single ‘Sunshine.’ Juno-nominated songwriter and producer Colin Carbonera (Rabino, Denise Valle) mixed and performs on the song, with mastering by Philip Shaw Bova (Peach Pit, Lake Street Dive). ‘Sunshine’ is groovy, bright, and soulful and feels like drinking Caprisun in the summertime. The bass line and keys bounce along on a warm breeze that smells like sunscreen and freshly cut grass.
Daughter Dentist has graced many local stages, including Calgary staples such as The Ironwood, The Palomino, and The Ship & Anchor. Krystle has performed at Lucent Festival and opened for artists including Northcote. Her songs have received radio airplay on CKUA, CJSW, and X92.9.
