National Music Centre’s Sundays in C-Square Concert Series Returns
OPEN-AIR MUSIC SERIES TO FEATURE FOUR WEEKS OF SUN-SOAKED PERFORMANCES IN EAST VILLAGE
(Calgary, AB — July 23, 2021) From August 8-29, the National Music Centre (NMC) will present a live afternoon concert series, featuring an assortment of musical genres every Sunday afternoon in East Village’s C-Square.
The annual summer series, which has been on hiatus since 2019, returns with a lively roster of rhythms, from dueling pianos and lyrical instrumental music to classic country and folk-pop jams.
“We’re so excited to bring this series back and fill the East Village with the sounds of live music again,” said Adam Fox, NMC’s Director of Programs. “We’ll be showcasing artists from the local Alberta community and injecting some good summertime vibes back into C-Square.”
These free, family-friendly performances run each Sunday (weather permitting) from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, August 8-29, at the corner of 7 Avenue and 4 Street SE in East Village.
This year’s Sundays in C-Square performers are:
August 8: Dueling Piano Kings
August 15: Violinist/fiddler Jeremy Gignoux
August 22: Country artist D’Orjay the Singing Shaman
August 29: Folk-pop songwriter Amelie Patterson
Known for taking song requests and interactive sing-along performances, the Dueling Piano Kings are an entertainment experience unlike any other out there. The Kings will go head-to-head in a piano battle, performing a multi-decade medley of popular hits.
Jeremy Gignoux oscillates between calling himself a violinist and a fiddler. His main project, the Acoustic Ensemble, plays lyrical instrumental music that defies genre classification, stretching from Parisian Swing to folk experiments. The Ensemble will perform as a trio with Keith Rodger on upright bass and tenor banjo and Nathan M. Godfrey on resonator guitar and banjolin.
D’orjay The Singing Shaman’s style of country music continues to evolve, honouring the classic country music she grew up on living in rural Alberta while also colouring outside the lines of what current mainstream country music has to offer. As a Black Queer woman, D'orjay is passionate, vocal, and committed to bringing diversity, and inclusiveness to country music.
Amelie Patterson is a pop music workhorse with hooks to spare. She has performed alongside Sarah Harmer, Matt Anderson, and Serena Ryder, and has played at festivals including the Calgary Folk Festival, BlockHeater 2020, and Stampede City Sessions. A songwriting tour de force, she has drawn heavy comparisons to indie-folk contemporaries including Arcade Fire, Kathleen Edwards, Begonia, and Feist.
After taking in a free concert, wander over to Studio Bell to take advantage of free admission, courtesy of ATB. Enjoy a musical afternoon with new and updated exhibitions, including a stop at the Speak Up! gallery that honours 15 Indigenous trailblazers that have made their mark on music and culture in Canada. Or catch roaming educators for instrument show-and-tells, science and sound demos, and performances on fan favourite, the Kimball Theatre Organ.
The NMC Gift Shop & Café will also be open, offering grab-and-go snacks and drinks, and fresh pastries and charcuterie plates. Eat in or take your food out for a picnic on St. Patrick’s Island.
