“It’s a family affair. I wrote 'One Hundred Years Strong' with my brother Gord and my wife Louise around the kitchen table in 1974. The city of Calgary held a song competition for Calgary’s Centennial. My brother and I were playing in a group called Happy Feeling. Our first hit - 'Happy Feeling' - stayed on the Billboard charts as #1 only to be bumped by Anne Murray’s hit 'Snowbird.' 'One Hundred Years Strong' took one evening to write. We started in a country vein and it just went on from there. We submitted the song and fortune smiled on us - we won! We recorded the song in Barry Allen Studios, Edmonton. For the entire Centennial year, the song was played every night by CBC Television at the conclusion of the daily broadcast. The song was also played at noon on the Carillons in the Calgary Tower.”
